Mama Meg's Parlour and Kathy's Famous Ice Cream Sandwiches
Mama Meg's Parlour, LLC (Mama Meg's) is a subsidiary of Kathy's Frozen Novelties, LLC. Mama Meg's was created to share the best, made from scratch handmade ice cream sandwiches in the world, or at least our customers think so. The real story is the ice cream sandwich...it all started over 60 years ago, in the small village of Mazeppa, MN. In the 1950’s, Kathy McKeon’s mom use to make Kathy and her siblings homemade ice cream sandwiches. This continued, and Kathy began making them for her own kids in the late 1970’s. In 1981, Kathy started the sole proprietorship, Kathy’s Handmade Ice Cream Sandwiches, and began commercially selling her frozen novelties at Oronoco Gold Rush Days in Oronoco, MN. The first year Kathy made and sold 25 ice cream sandwiches.
Over the past thirty years Kathy has made her famous Ice Cream Sandwiches available at festivals, fairs, and events all over the State of Minnesota. She also began making them available through retailers in Southeast Minnesota. After raising her children, her successful career as a teacher, and now a travel agent, Kathy was ready to settle down and look toward enjoying her retirement.
David Hewitt grew up riding his bicycle up and down the Douglas Trail, and has fond memories of eating Kathy's Handmade Ice Cream Sandwiches at the Douglas, MN corner store. Every year David would venture to the Gold Rush Days to enjoy his favorite ice cream treat. After getting married in 2005, David made sure to share this specialty with his wife Meghan. David and Meghan, a great baker herself, wanted to figure out a way to share their favorite treat with others. By drawing on the past relationship with Kathy and her family, and Kathy's desire to slow down her efforts in making and selling the ice cream sandwiches, David and Meghan were allowed the opportunity to help carry on the legacy started over 60 years ago.
Through careful instruction and practice with Kathy, David and Meghan learned the tricks to making this classic treat. In 2011, they acquired Kathy's business, changed the name to Kathy's Frozen Novelties, LLC (the manufacturer), and started Mama Meg's Parlour, LLC (the retailer) as a classic ice cream parlour to share their passion with others. Although plagued by inflation, we keep the tradition by keeping the name 'Kathy's Handmade Ice Cream Sandwich.'
Help us keep the 1950's, as well as Kathy and her mom's legacy alive! If you get a chance, check out our upcoming events or visit a partner retailer to try these famous ice cream sandwiches. Thank you and enjoy!
